On Thursday, I got a call from Hutt hospital. There had been a cancellation and was I able to go in and have my final surgery – the nipple reconstruction. I said YES. There was a rapid re-organisation of the day for the 12.30 appointment. I was in shock a little but positive shock. Also, I was glad for the surprise surgery as it didn’t allow me time to get nervous.
I arrived at 12.15 – to see a brand new surgery day ward. It is really something special and makes the experience a bit easier. Unfortunately, I didn’t get in to surgery until just before 3pm but these things happen and the previous surgeries were important and had run a bit over time. I was glad to have my laptop with me and was able to listen to music, do emails and a bit of writing. As well as …waiting.
I was very lucky as the surgery was under a local anesthetic and took around 45 minutes. I literally did not feel a thing as my breast is still a bit numb. Annie had explained that creating a nipple is a bit like origami; I was able to see it at the end of the procedure and I think she did a great job. I was fully conscious during the whole surgery which was a pleasant change. I will have the stitches out 12 days after the op and the only annoying thing is not being able to get the dressing wet (so showers and washing my hair are a bit tricky) and no bending.
I am very grateful to Hutt Plastics for ringing me and getting this final surgery done. I feel a sense of completion…just tattooing to be done now.
