Hurricane to the rescue
People have been very generous with donating auction items. I want to tell you about the Wellington Hurricanes’ former All Black and Coach Alama Ieremia. Not only did Alama organise a Hurricanes’ rugby jersey signed by ALL the current Hurricanes. But in collecting the jersey from Alama on a cold Wellington day this week, I managed to get myself locked inside a rugby ground in Newtown, Wellington! I had gone to the wrong rugby ground and after realising, went to leave and found someone had physically locked the high gates. I was locked in and high gates went right around the rugby ground.
After panicking a little, I realised that the only way out was to ring someone (luckily, I had my cell phone). So..I texted and rang Alama “this might sound stupid but I’ve somehow locked myself in the other rugby ground. Can you please find the caretaker and get the keys to get me out?” A few minutes later, Alama whizzed up the hill in his car, jumped out with the keys and literally rescued me from the rugby ground. Alama Ieremia is in fact a hero…and he gave me the rugby jersey for the auction too. Jeepers, a funny story to tell later but I wouldn’t have liked to be overnight in the rugby ground. Thanks Alama! and thanks Hurricanes.
The Tana Umaga Foundation
Tana Umaga, former All Black Captain and Counties Manukau Rugby Coach also donated a signed rugby jersey and a Tana Umaga Foundation signed rugby ball. Thanks so much, it’s very generous. By the way, Tana’s charity, the Tana Umaga Foundation (TUF) was established to support talent and reward hard work. Their objectives are:
- To encourage and assist promising New Zealanders, with a focus on young people who are hardworking and who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to achieve and excel in their education and achieve their potential.
- To establish a scholarship to be awarded to a student or students who have attended Wainuiomata High School.
- To undertake such other activities and provide such other assistance whether by way of financial assistance, scholarships or otherwise as the Trustees see fit of a charitable nature for the benefit of New Zealanders.
