Now that I’ve finished bc treatment, I wanted to share what got me through. Here are 50 things that got me through bc.

Therapies and retreats
These therapies really helped a lot with the stress of diagnosis and treatments plus the side effects from treatments:
- Art Therapy with Mary Brownlow – through a Cancer Society support programme.

- Meditation and mindfulness with Stephen Archer – through a Cancer Society support programme
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) with Jasmina Kovacev
- Prayer and healing with Father John Rea
- Silva meditation CDs
- Full Spectrum Wellbeing cancer retreat with Jasmina Kovacev
- Pink Pilates – so good after surgery and chemo.
- Family. Thanks for coming to appointments and hanging out.
- Super duper friends. People who kept in touch, came to chemo, sent cards and thoughts…it all adds up.
- Joy the nurse. My Mum helped nurse me through my surgeries and chemo appointments.
- Generosity. People can be so kind and generous when you least expect it.
- The Cancer Society offer so much support, kindness and cool programmes.
- Meeting others going through bc or other cancers.
- Bio-oil was recommended to me for all my scars. I think it’s great and still use it daily.
- Kerastaste shampoo. If your hair is falling out and/or growing back, this shampoo is for you. It was recommended by my hairdresser and I think works well.
- Benefiber is an excellent supplement when having all those digestive and intestinal issues during chemo.
- Photography. I really enjoy just taking photos and playing around with them on the PC.
- Serena Star Leonard and learning how to put a website together. I did Serena’s Website Launchpad course and the rest is history.
- BC Nirvana. Having this website helped me and also helped others.
- Going to art galleries, very inspiring.
- Taking time off from work for cancer treatments. This allowed me to rest and heal more quickly than when I worked and did chemo at the same time.
- Being frugal. Because I’m not working, I have learned to not spend much.
- The NZ public health system. Thank you for funding my surgeries and all the chemo treatments including Herceptin.
- Emails from people all over the world – a real connection to the world.
- Shopping for (designer) clothes on sale
- Setting goals for the future – a new bucket list
- Holidays to look forward to
- Nieces and nephews
- Planning an end of treatment celebration
- Rest. Resting throughout the day when I was fatigued.
- Heaps of sleep and sleeping in. Not having to set an alarm clock.
- Cycling. I bought a bike at the end of chemo and have never looked back.
- Walking. I prefer walking on the beach as it is so uplifting and recharging.
- A relaxed pace of life. Not scheduling too many things and allowing lots of time to get to appointments.
- Using my intuition

- Cancelling appointments when I wasn’t well
- The beach – walking and just looking out to the sea

- Dr Susanna Kent. My GP who saved my life by noticing a breast lump and referring me for a mammogram.
- Dr Christine Mouat. My wonderful breast surgeon who has been through everything with me since 2007.
- Dr Kate Gregory. My wonderful Oncologist who helped me get through chemo.
- Bernadette Mahar, my Oncology district nurse who helped me through all the yucky chemo stuff.
- Nurses at the chemo day ward. Are angels. Thank you.
