After six weeks back at work, I am starting to feel that I have work fitness. I seem to be able to handle the length of the day and a variety of tasks. It is a good feeling. Granted, I am now working 4 x 6.5 hour days, not full days. But I am feeling good about how much I have achieved.
Physical side effects
I still feel a bit seedy first thing most mornings when I wake up and I I continue to have problems with headaches and thinning hair. I had a blood test and it doesn’t seem that there is any medical reason for the hair loss. But stress seems to be the answer ie going back to work has been a big change for me. I have started using the Kerastase shampoo for thinning hair recommended by my hairdresser. And I just try to have quite gentle days (i.e. not plan much socially on work days and rest on my Wednesdays off work).
Since August 2012, I have finished all my treatment, done a four week holiday in France, started working 3.5 days per week, moved house and lost 12 kg. It is quite a lot of progress and if I can take time to stop and reflect, I have done well.
I have a few new initiatives coming up with the website which I am excited about. I am thinking about offering one on one cancer-coaching in person or by skype, and post-cancer courses. Plus a few other things :). Let me know what you think about the cancer coaching and courses. And what else would you like to see BC Nirvana providing….I’d love to hear from you.
Project: A life I love
Since the middle of 2012, I have put a lot of thought in to who I am, what my wants and needs are and what my definition of success is. It has taken a while but I am getting there. It can be difficult for some of us to know exactly what we want and need in order to negotiate life on our terms. But I am getting there.
My goal is ‘portfolios’ – a few different activities for work and income with flexibility and control over my day to day life. I’m wanting to develop the website more, write, do some coaching and workshops and do consulting or contracting in my previous field. And I want to travel for fun a lot more.
Turning the ship around
After getting clear on what I want, I have realised that it will take time to turn my life around (similar to the energy required to turn a ship around). After years of ingrained habits, it is taking a lot of focus and energy to do something different. I am getting there but I probably need a 500 day plan rather than a three month plan.
What is helping me with my recovery:
- Acupuncture weekly with Pete Larking
- Lots of support and feeling connection:)
- Being with people during the day – in the office
- Feeling productive and contributing
- Cycling, walking or yoga every day
- Doing my self care first in the morning – meditation and exercise
- Having a relaxed start to the day – no alarm clock, exercise and starting work at 9.30am
- Friends and family
- Eating really well
- Having fun things to look forward to
- Doing creative things – e.g. brainstorming, writing and planning fun things for the website
- Nature every day – the ocean, clouds, light of the sky and sea birds
