This week, I feature a column from Stephanie Devine from Essential Luxuries for Cancer. She is featuring her top product of the month – the lovely pyjamas.
I must say that I can relate 100% as the day before my surgery, I had a panic attack going from shop to shop looking for the right pyjamas, slippers and night gown. I wish I had known about Stephanie’s website.
Stephanie also donated the beautiful cashmere beanie in the competition recently. Thanks Stephanie!
The search for good hospital pyjamas……
In the first in a series about the challenge of finding what you need when diagnosed with breast cancer, I have to start with the humble pyjama.
On a Wednesday afternoon 6 years ago, I went for a routine fine-needle biopsy on a lump that had previously come out clear on a core biopsy. On Thursday morning I got a call to come back in and talk. On Friday morning I was told I had breast cancer, and I was booked into hospital for surgery Monday 7.30am. To say that things happened quickly is an understatement.
In addition to the emotional carnage, and the enormous rearrangement of my life that had to immediately take place (I was self employed and very busy at the time), I needed heaps of things very quickly, including non-wired bras and organic skincare, but first things first, I needed good hospital pyjamas!
Never really being the sort of person to wear pyjamas in everyday life, I imagined this would be a simple task.
I was wrong! On my essentials list was:
1) Must be front fastening for easy access to injured breasts
2) Must be roomy, and light, whilst also offering good cover to preserve my modesty
3) Must be 100% natural fibres, and ideally white, for multiple hot washes and to feel clean and pure during my time inside
4) Must be bleachable to remove any blood stains
and finally, most importantly……
5) MUST MUST MUST have pockets to carry mobile/keys/cash etc!
I have never seen such a sad collection of synthetic, cheaply made, overly embellished, impractical items of clothing in my life! So much so that when I set up my site last year, providing what I believe from my experience that people want and need when going through treatment, a good pair of hospital pyjamas was high on my list, and indeed the first thing you need as you embark upon this journey.
The 100% linen pyjamas I have made came too late for my treatment, but when I was recently grounded by flu, I lived in these things and marvelled at their comfort, simplicity and practicality. I am very proud of them, and only this morning they came out of a brutal 90C wash, and are brightening on the line in the sunshine 🙂
