I wanted to give an update as I have now done four hyperbaric oxygen treatments (HBOTs) and over 10 pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMF) mats at Health Evolution in the last couple of months.
I first heard about the clinic through my Mother Joy who has friends who’ve had very positive results from doing HBOT and PEMF treatments. I really wanted to try these treatments myself.
Hayley Brown’s story of breast cancer survival is amazing. Hayley and Todd from Health Evolution have done incredible amounts of research into finding the most effective technologies to treat and prevent breast cancer.
I wanted to utilise these treatments to do i) breast cancer prevention now that I am healthy plus ii) combat some of the issues I’ve experienced post-cancer surgery and treatment.
For most of us who’ve been through surgery, radio or chemo, there are a few side effects that continue well after the treatments end. It’s quite usual to have nerve damage from surgery – around the arm for example – and from chemo – especially in areas such as feet and hands.
Post-treatment effects I have years after treatment ended are:
- Headaches and migraines
- Bone stiffness and pain in my bones and joints
- An arthritis-like feeling in my fingers
- A sore back pretty much all the time and particularly sore lower back
- Sore knees and a stiff sore left hip
- Nerve damage in my hands, feet and under my right arm
- Pain around my right shoulder and inability to straighten my right arm
- Tightness in my tummy from where muscle was taken in the breast reconstruction
- Low immunity
- In the mornings, I feel a bit unwell until I’ve been up for a couple of hours
- A dull pain throughout most of my muscles
- Hay fever
- Fatigue and low energy
All these things have become my new normal. I don’t really even think about these things at all as I’ve just learned to live with them. In fact, I pretty much forget about them until I wrote a list before going in for the first hyperbaric chamber. I wanted to be able to check if there were changes in my body.
Prior to cancer, I had mild asthma and eczema so it will be great to work on those too.
Doing the treatments
First I lay down on a PEMF mat. These are very good for healing including any kind of pain, bone pain, arthritis right through to depression and insomnia.
Dr Oz even talks about them as a game changer in medicine.
Hayley talked me through what would happen in the chamber. Hayley went through a checklist with me and because I had a cold, she put me in the chamber to go on reduced pressure. I lay down with my journal, a DVD player and my drink bottle. I was a bit cold and there was a blanket and lots of cushions. There was a walkie talkie so I could communicate with Hayley at all times.
I felt a tiny bit strange going into the enclosed space but once inside, it felt like a small tent and I like tents. I also had a cannula for increased oxygen through my nose. I pretty much focused on watching the DVD to distract myself as I didn’t know what was going to happen. As the air pressure increased in the chamber, I felt a bit of pressure build up in my ears. I just swallowed and had some water.
The DVD was a great focus and before I knew it, 90 minutes had passed and I hadn’t quite watched the end of the movie.
During the session, I felt sensations in my feet and lower back. Also in my stomach.
After the HBOT
I realised that afterwards, my fingers felt different. I could bend them easier and there was less kind of arthritic pain or nerve damage pain from the chemo.
I also noticed that my back wasn’t sore. I had actually booked a massage for later in the day as my back was quite sore. To be honest, I didn’t feel I needed the massage.
I decided to book another session a few days later.
After the second HBOT
The same process and again I could feel sensations in my stomach, feet, hands and back.
- My fingers have lost almost all their pain and stiffness
- My back felt really flexible. After my first lot of chemo, my back had really seized up and was quite inflexible. After the second HBOT, I noticed it was easier to do yoga and my back had relaxed to how it was before I had chemo in 2007. Perhaps not quite as good but almost completely there
- Nerve damage on the soles of my feet had improved around 60-70%; it is usually excruciating for me to have a pedicure for example but my feet felt that they were going back to normal
- When doing yoga the next day I noticed that the site on my tummy where I had surgery – was 75% less tight and was actually quite flexible
After my third and fourth HBOTs
When I went for my fourth session, I had a cold. However, my ears were clear so I had full pressure in the chamber for the first time. I felt sensations in my feet, abdomen, knees and fingers.
After the chamber, I didn’t feel that I had a cold anymore or perhaps a tiny trace of it. My back feels basically pain free. I noticed my new back this morning when I did my yoga class and found that there were no stiff or sore bits in my back to stretch out! My knees feel less sore and stiff and my feet and hands are continuing to heal.
I am quite excited as to what my new body and new future might hold. Hayley has encouraged me to do 4 HBOTs over 4 days – to see what being really healthy feels like.
I am a convert to the HBOTs and PEMFs and would love to see how else my body can improve.
I would really recommend these for anyone going through cancer treatment, with chronic fatigue, arthritis etc. Obviously talk to your medical professionals etc.
Body healing happens in a sequence which is unknown to us – it just takes time and being realistic about the number of sessions required eg 20 sessions for complex and chronic conditions.
Change of attitude
What I’ve found is that it takes years to accept that you are ill or have health issues. Over time, you withdraw from the ‘normal’ world in some ways and end up living in a medical and sometimes limited world. Over time also, I have made peace with a body with so many scars and side effects from the cancer journeys. What I’ve found is that once I saw that healing was possible, I now have to change my attitude about life and my body.
Instead of feeling slightly ill for many years to come, I am now starting to understand that I can be very well for many years. It requires a change in mind-set and a change in lifestyle. It has so many ramifications that I can’t quite get my head around it.
I think it’s easy to be closed minded to innovations in health and healing. I think once people open their minds to the potential of healing with PEMF and HBOT, the world is really your oyster.
The cost of these treatments is not huge compared to the costs of being unwell. The PEMF mats are $20 for 20 minutes and the HBOTs are $80. There is also an option to buy a mat for your home use.
Contact Hayley for an appointment – and if you’re out of town, talk to them about who you can go to – or purchasing a mat for your home use
Thanks for everything Todd and Hayley.
