Shortly known as HBO, hyperbaric oxygen treatment was initially proposed as treatment for cancer patients back in 60s. In 2006, there was a study performed in Japan that involved patients with brain tumors; after receiving chemotherapy and radiation their survival time was increased, as the side effects diminished.
Using hyperbaric oxygen therapy together with chemotherapy has proven to help reduce breast cancer. Breast cancer occurs mostly in women, and it has become an international threat. HBO has shown visible effects against various types of mammary cancer cells; apparently, it leads to less restrictive and aggressive growth of larger tumor cell colonies.
There have been studies performed on the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and prostate cancer, and the results were quite affirming. This form of cancer occurs in men and it is the 2nd deadliest type; in vitro experiments proved that HBO decreases the growth rate of cancer cells, and it may even boost their sensitivity to chemotherapy.
Hyperbaric oxygen against hypoxia
Hyperbaric oxygen has proven to be extremely efficient against hypoxia; the therapy is based on administering oxygen in proportion of 100% at an increased atmospheric pressure. The treatment is meant to improve the amount of oxygen inside the plasma, thus boosting O2 tissue delivery regardless of hemoglobin. Nowadays, HBO therapy is routinely utilized for many illnesses, including those related to hypoxia and ischemia. The treatment is safe and complications are extremely rare considering today’s austere standard treatment protocols. Approved health conditions that can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen are:
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Decompression sickness
- Radiation injury
- Non-healing wounds
It is believed that oxygen is needed for important processes that involve wound healing, including fibroblast activation, resistance to infection, angiogenesis, collagen deposition and epithelization. Some specialists fear that HBO could multiply cancer cells; for many years physicians have tried to elucidate whether hyperbaric oxygen promotes or heals cancer cell growth. Fortunately, in the 2000s specialists demonstrated that HBO doesn’t promote cancer; on the contrary, it may actually help eradicate it.
As far as breast cancer in concerned, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may have a powerful anti-proliferative effect on mammary cells that are cancerous. This means that the treatment could have positive results on women with breast cancer. Over the years, many studies have been performed on the matter. Some revealed that hyperbaric oxygen may have significant inhibiting effects against mammary tumors.
In spite of an overwhelming number of studies on hyperbaric oxygen treatment and breast cancer, no clinical trial can guarantee that the therapy can indeed cure cancer. Further research is being performed and many specialists are feeling hopeful; with the advent of technology, medical breakthroughs occur on an annual basis. HBO has great potential, although the theories regarding its link to cancer still need time to develop in order to become feasible.
