CanSurvive NZ Dragon Boat Team
CanSurvive is a Wellington Dragon Boat Team made up of Breast Cancer Survivors from all round the region. There are many advantages to being part of the CanSurvive Dragon Boat team. In 1995 Dr Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia researched rehabilitation following diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He believed upper body exercise has a role in recovery from breast cancer and lymphedema because it can improve range of motion and reverse muscle atrophy, activate skeletal muscle and stimulate the immune system. Dragon boating was chosen for several reasons. It is a strenuous, repetitive upper body activity and is non-weight bearing reducing the risk of injury.
Being diagnosed with breast cancer and then facing the gauntlet of treatments to ensure the best chance of survival brings out an inner strength that is definitely part of what makes our Dragon Boating Team outstanding. We are an enthusiastic group of survivors who thrive on the positive outcome that being involved in a Dragon Boating team provides. As well as gaining support within the team – we hope our profile shows other women that positives do come from such a challenging journey.
You are very welcome to come along to any of their gatherings to understand more about who they are and whether or not Dragon Boating is for you.
